log file backup

Postby pasita » Thu Jun 21, 2012 5:35 pm

You might want to consider, at the time of launching PT4, renaming the PT4 log as .logprevious or something. When I experience a crash or another problem, it's not my first priority to try and find the log and prepare shipping it, especially if I should have money on the tables. (I'm sure many people won't even find the log without help in Win7 environment - or restarting the client.) So I restart -> the log with the crash is gone.

Had some severe lagging with custom stats hud population (PT4 crashed soon after) and actually checked the log, there was something about not able to use the cache because of a column I'd made. So I restarted PT4 to check what might be going on with the stat, now everything works fine. But the log is, well, history.

That's a good suggestion - I'll bring it up with the development team.

The development team did remind me to point out that we do have a built in crash reporter which uploads the previous log - if you do get any crashes that should be triggering.

Are you uploading files from my PC without telling me? It's either that or the trigger failed last night.

Anywhoo, it's not always a crash, might be slowness or other problems causing me to quickly restart PT4. You'll have to judge whether the log backup would be useful enough for debugging purposes, I guess. I know I could have used it yesterday.

No, we don't upload any files without your permission - after a crash PT4 should tell you that the crash reporter will run at restart, and when it does it asks you to describe what you were doing and then uploads the files. You can choose not to do this, of course, but the crash reports are very useful to us. Only PT4-related data files are uploaded - no private information.

Ok, well in that case, the system doesn't work too well. As I was building some stats, the PT4 windows first went slow, i.e. a couple of seconds of the Win7 equivalent of the hourglass when ever I tried to switch windows. Then they went totally unresponsive, i.e. "hourglass" and grayed out for half a minute. Then they disappeared. No crash reporter at restart.

I guess it's possible that while the windows didn't respond I clicked on the close button on the main window too ( I tried it on the HUD or stat editor window, no response, didn't even see the "Application has stopped responding" prompt by Windows) so maybe technically it wasn't a crash but a freeze, followed by a sudden gain of just enough consciousness to shut down "normally" (from the program's point of view). It sure felt like a crash from the end user point of view, though... it would be interesting to check this from backed up logs;)

The crash reporter only runs when PT4 actually crashes - if it freezes and you terminate it (or it recovers) then the crash reporter will not run.
