Error 101 ! Urgent

Hi there,

Once I start Pokertracker I receive the following error message:

"Unable to connect to the database.

101 - SQLSTATE = 08001
could not connect to server: Connection refused (0x0000274D/10061)
is this server running on host "localhostQ" and accepting
TCP/IP connections on port 5432?"

I unplugged the PC and put it in another room, then brought it back couple hours later, after this short journey PT stopped working
as it used to. No clue what could have made the change.
Recently installed software: PT3 (uninstalled), new Virus software (longer time ago), DVD shrink (is there a connection?)

When I go to Admin tools and look for PostgreSQL it says "automatically" but the status remains unstarted (I use a German Vista Version).
When I try to start it manually by right clicking "start" then it says (translation):

"Service "PostgreSQL Database Server 8.2" was started on "local computer" then stopped/paused.
Some services are stopped/paused automatically, if they aren't used from other services or programs."

I tried other firewall configurations and tried around using restarts and changing some configurations but without any success.

I tried PGadmin III and started the Database Server via start service and it works, but once I click on "connect" I still receive a error message and PT itself still doesn't works either.
I tried changing "localhost" to " * " but without success it seems.
Any more suggestions ? I am kinda puzzled here. I would like to upgrade to Pokertracker 3 anyways but my old databases aren't accessable at the moment and its very important that I can access my data from the last few weeks.

Go to the c:\program files\postgresql\8.2\data folder. Is there a file called postmaster.pid ? If so, delete it and restart the computer and see if you can start the service again.

Hey Pat,

deleting the postmaster.pid helped. I can start Pokertracker now and access my ring game statistics.
When I try control panel -> admin... it says that postgre is running and starts automatically. So this seems to work as well.
Also when I use PG Admin III it says that the service is started but right clicking and trying to "connect" still doesn't 'work.

Unfortunately when I go to the Database Functions I receive the same error message stated in
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=4217

At least I can access my ring stats.. I don't need to use pt2 in the future in case pt3 works well but I would rather make pt2 work flawlessly.

Open the PostgreSQL Settings window in PT. What values are in each field on this window (except password)?

Pat, I have the same problem but I don't have the file "postmaster.pid"

My settings look like this 5432: localhost: postgres: PostgreSQL Unicode: Unicode minus the psswrd

Did you try restarting the computer?
When did you last backup your database?

yes I have restarted the computer - didn't fix the prob. I haven't backed up my db.

You are going to have to do the following steps to try to recover the data.

1. Create a new folder on your C drive called PostgreSQL_Data.
2. Go to the c:\program files\postgresql\8.2 folder. Right-click on the "data" folder and select "Copy" from the popup menu.
3. Go to the newly created c:\PostgreSQL_Data folder and right-click and select "Paste" from the popup menu.
4. Now, go to the Start menu and select Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and then remove PostgreSQL 8.2 from the list.
5. From the Start menu again select Run. On the window that opens type "COMMAND" and hit OK. This will open a DOS window. Type the following next to the prompt...

net user postgres /delete

and hit ENTER to run it. Then type EXIT to close the DOS window.

6. Now, download and reinstall PostgreSQL as directed here:

WITH THE EXCEPTION THAT on the second window where it asks you where you want to install PostgreSQL click on the "Data Directory" button and navigate to the c:\PostgreSQL_Data\data folder and select that. This will force it to try to reuse your old data.

CONTINUE until you get to the window that has the "Initialize Database Cluster" box at the top left corner. UNCHECK THIS BOX and click the Next button and then just continue installing from there.

7. Once the install is done, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER and then try to open PT again.

Pat,
I got up to "Initialize database cluster", entered the pw, pressed next, than received the error, "The specified data directory is not empty. If you have an existing database with the same major version number, you do not need to initialise a database cluster. If you have an existing database with a different major version you need to backup you old database and create a new one.
