Upgrading to Postgresql 8.3.1

Postby Cavok » Tue Apr 15, 2008 11:10 am

Hi!

I'm about to move my database from my laptop to my desktop but I'm running different versions of Postgresql.

The database on the laptop is 8.3.1-rc1 and on the desktop I'm running 8.2.4 planning to install 8.3.1. Anything special I need to consider before I install the new version (that is now 8.3.1)?

I have tried to just restore the backup into 8.2.4 and all the figures looks fine but I haven't tried to import any new hands yet...

It should be OK. Restoring a backup file from an older version into a newer version of PostgreSQL hasn't caused any users problems in the past when going from 8.0 to 8.2 so I would expect any problems now.

Ok, so I'm the first one to mess it up...

Postgres 8.3.1 installed ok but when I restored the database from my backup I got a lot of error messages at the beginning in the DOS window, was however unable to read them since they scrolled by as the restore continued.

When I started the install I got a warning that the database already existed, "PTPGSQL1", and I would lose data if I continued but since I have a backup of that database too that was not a problem.

All the data was there when I opened PT and got the settings together but I'm not sure about the portnumbers. When I installed 8.3.1 I set the port to 5433 since it said 5432 was occupied and I can't change that in PT now.

Ok, everything was fine but now PAHUD can't find the new database so no stats. Tried everything and then uninstalled 8.3.1 and back to 8.2 which can't open the database any more. This worked before but since I've tried everything I have also installed the 2.17.01i patch for PT and since then it can't read my database...

Error message when I open PT says:
Unable to connect to the database.
999 - SQLSTATE=IM002
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Datasource can not be found and no standard driver is set
(Last sentence is in swedish so the exact wording is probably different in english)

Any way of rolling PT back to 2.17.01g and solving the problem with PAHUD not finding the database or do you have any other suggestions?

Best regards
Stefan

Open PT, go to the File > Maintain Database Names window.
Click the Add button.
Enter a new description, check the "Dflt" box and in the last field choose "Select existing PostgreSQL database" from the list and choose the PostgreSQL database again.
Now close and reopen PT and then check PokerAce, do you see the database now?

I had done that 10 times but now for the first time I get the option to choose portnumber 5433.

How do you do it Pat??? 8-)

I'll check with PAHUD and get back to you...

Everything works just fine, once I got the option to select the right portnumber it runs again.

Is it safe to just uninstall 8.2 now so I don't have two versions of postgres running? Do they both start up when I start the computer if I have two verions installed?

Once again thanks!

I was a little bit too fast there...

All of a sudden it can't connect to the database and when I open the database names window it has lost the type and portnumber for the db. Type is listed as "Other" and portnumber is blank.

This is how it looked before when nothing was working but I can repeat the steps and open a new one with a new name and that one runs fine. Don't know for how long though... Any settings to make it remember the database that I have missed?

On the Utilities > PostgreSQL Settings window you can add another entry that is pointing to port 5433.

So you would have 2 entries, one for port 5432 and PostgreSQL 8.2 and one for port 5433 and PostgreSQL 8.3.

I would not uninstall anything until you make sure this is all working for a few days with the new database.
